Sound on! Here I’m steam bending ribs into the second kayak in my recent design progression to update the largest sizes of both of my modern kayak designs. . This is bend fought me a little bit because I was lazy and I let my rib stock dry out beforehand. A few ribs made it second trip to the steam box but overall it went pretty well. . Hoping to do a saran wrap float test by the end of the week but I need to find someone that’s 250 pounds. Any volunteers? . . . #steambending #kayakbuilding #ski

Steam bending green oak ribs for the canoe 😍 The oak is super straight grained and knot free. Each rib was steamed for around four minutes. When steamed, the wood becomes flexible like hot plastic. Once cooled, it sets in shape permanently. Five ribs snapped or cracked - some were obvious imperfections in the wood and some looked perfect but were brittle. Today we are steam bending kayak ribs. The bow ribs in my F1 design take such a steep V shape that even after cutting away the inside edge of the mortise with a carving knife and I still have to literally crack the gunnels to get the right shape. .
