Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene became the first player in Major League Baseball history to homer twice in the ninth inning of a single game on Friday night, accomplishing the feat as part of a 9-1 victory against the Los Angeles Angels (box score).

Riley Greene didn’t want to dwell too much on becoming the first player in major league history to homer twice in the ninth inning of a game.

Greene said after his 12-strikeout gem against the Nationals that he was trying to throw Abrams out after he was struck by the ball. And when Reds staffers came out to the mound to check up on him, Greene indicated he shooed them away.

Hunter Greene struck out 12, the second-highest total of his big league career, while allowing two hits over six innings and leading the Cincinnati Reds over the Washington Nationals 6-1.
