Edan Alexander, an Israeli soldier raised in New Jersey, is the last U.S. citizen captured by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023, believed to still be alive. Four other Americans' bodies are still held in Gaza.

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip — Hamas said Sunday that the last living American hostage in Gaza, Edan Alexander, will be released as part of efforts to establish a ceasefire, reopen crossings into the Israeli-blockaded territory and resume the delivery of aid. Two Hamas officials told The Associated Press they expect the release in the next 48 hours.

Hamas will release on Monday Israeli-American Edan Alexander, believed to be the last surviving U.S. hostage held by the militant Palestinian group in Gaza, a spokesperson for the Hamas armed wing said.
