A light earthquake rattled Beijing overnight, waking residents and sending students rushing from their dorms as videos of shaking living rooms went viral on Chinese social media on Wednesday.

A strong earthquake killed more than 100 people in Tibet and left many others trapped in the autonomous region of western China, state media say.

Researchers, including Zhu Hongbin from the Beijing Earthquake Agency, analysed nearly 150 years of seismic data, starting 1879, and found six major seismic “active periods” in the region.
