A coalition of state attorneys general filed a lawsuit Monday challenging the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s demand for states to turn over personal data — including names, birthdates, and home addresses — for people who are enrolled in a federally funded food assistance program.

Democratic officials fear that sensitive data from the food assistance program could be used to target undocumented people.

The Trump administration has allegedly defied court orders in a third of the lawsuits filed against it over immigration and federal funding disputes, raising concerns about the administration's respect for the judiciary's authority.
