The NWS Blacksburg VA issued a weather alert at 1:01 a.m. on Friday for snow until 3:15 a.m. The alert is for Ashe, Alleghany and Watauga counties.

A winter storm has brought cold temperatures, snow, ice and wind to large swathes of the US. Video filmed on Wednesday (Feb 19) shows Haywood County, North Carolina, buried under a thick layer of snow.

The North Carolina mountains could get hit hard with ice this week as there’s a concern for just that on Tuesday and Wednesday. Significant ice accumulation is possible on those days. There could also be numerous downed trees and power outages as ice begins to accumulate in those areas along with heavy rain through the week.
