Sialadenitis is common in elderly people who have salivary gland stones. It can also occur in infants during the first few weeks of life. Without treatment, sialadenitis can become a severe infection.

The major salivary glands (i.e., parotid, submandibular, sublingual) are affected 80%-85% of the time. Approximately 64% to 80% of all salivary gland tumors occur in the parotid gland.
