The United States has slapped Sudan’s army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, with a sanction, accusing him of choosing war over negotiations. The US said that al-Burhan has thwarted every effort to bring an end to the conflict that has killed tens of thousands of people and driven millions from their homes.

"The Sudanese government rejects and condemns the US Treasury Department's sanctions against Sovereignty Council Chair and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

NAIROBI — The Biden administration on Thursday imposed sanctions on the head of the Sudanese military, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, for allegedly presiding over attacks on civilians, denying food aid to Sudanese citizens and contributing to what Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the “world’s worst humanitarian crisis.”
