A fast-moving Hawaii brush fire fueled by fierce winds forced the evacuation of about 50 Maui residents on the opposite side of the same island where a devastating blaze killed over 100 people two years ago.

A brush fire that broke out Sunday in remote terrain above Piilani Highway in Kahikinui has burned about 330 acres and was 80% contained as of this morning, Maui County officials said.

A 19-page letter began arriving last week with deadlines and instructions on how to file for part of the settlement.

KAHIKINUI, Hawaii (Island News) – The second day of the ongoing Kahikinui brush fire has been mapped at approximately 330 acres on Monday, according to the Maui Fire Department (MFD). The fire was contained to 93% as of 7 p.m. and Officials lifted evacuation orders as well due to the increased fire containment.

The Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) issued evacuation orders for homes near Mile Markers 24 and 25, with approximately 105 Kahikinui homestead lots in the area. Door-to-door evacuations were also conducted by Maui Police Department and MFD, according to an official update.
