Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Tuesday that a statue commemorating the Confederacy would be returned to Arlington National Cemetery. The statue, which Hegseth referred to as “The Reconciliation Monument,” was removed in 2023.

The NPS says that refurbishing and reinstalling the toppled statue “aligns with federal responsibilities under historic preservation law”

The National Park Service will reinstall a statue of a Confederate general in Washington, D.C. that was toppled during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests.
